What is scaling and root planing?
The preliminary stage of periodontal treatment is typically an in-depth cleaning above and below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar (calculus), which is called scaling and root planing. At DFW Implant Team, board-certified periodontist, Dr. Donald Steinberg, can use this procedure to remove the infection under the gums to begin the healing process of periodontal disease. As scaling and root planning requires an anesthetic to numb the teeth and gums, you can also choose a method of sedation for a more comfortable experience. If you only have a mild case of this disease, this may be the only treatment required for optimal oral health. However, patients with an advanced condition, our team will strategize a treatment plan to get your gums back on the right track, and hopefully avoid a more invasive procedure.

How is scaling and root planing performed?
A scaling and root planing (SRP) treatment may be performed with or without local anesthesia depending on the patient’s preference and the doctor’s suggestion. The DFW Implant Team's Registered Dental Hygieniest will use a scaler to carefully remove the plaque and tartar below the gum line of each tooth. Once the gum pockets are cleaned, the hygienist will plane (or smooth) the surface of the tooth to eliminate the crevices where plaque accumulates.
Is aftercare required for scaling and root planing?
Patients may experience minimal pain or discomfort, easily treated with anti-inflammatories, after their SRP treatment. It is important that the patient return for a 3 week evaluation to determine the effectiveness of the treatment. After that, follow a regular oral care routine, including brushing the teeth at least twice a day, flossing every day, using any products recommended by your doctor/hygienist, and schedule dental exams and cleanings, at the interval recommended. If needed, the hygienist can demonstrate and recommend proper technique for brushing and flossing. If the patient still has gum pockets deeper than 3 millimeters at their 3 week evaluation, additional scaling and root planing procedures may be performed along with more advanced treatments.
